An Introduction to Oncology Admixing
Course objectives
Oncology pharmacy is a growing field in the practice of pharmacy in South Africa. The skills and techniques required to perform basic oncology sterile admixing manipulations are crucial to the preparation of oncology chemotherapy. Quality assurance at every step is a prerequisite to delivering a safe product. Our objective in this course is to expose delegates tothe basic theoretical and practical aspects of preparing sterile oncology chemotherapy products for intravenous use. This includes developing a basic understanding of the safe preparation of sterile products and aseptic technique, working with biological safety cabinets, performing basic manipulations, managing the safe disposal of hazardous waste and quality assurance.

Persons working with oncology products. Pharmacists who are working in oncology admixing units. Nurses and pharmacists assistants working with chemotherapy. Persons interested in Oncology admixing.
Course content
The course will include the following topics. Background (cancer, chemotherapy and regulatory bodies); Introduction to Aseptic Technique (including types of workbenches, microbiological monitoring and validation); Administration systems, spill control, waste disposal and transport of preparations; Quality control and Record keeping; Calculations & label preparation for oncology chemotherapy; Practical skills (scrubbing,gowning, preparation of laminar flow hood, drug reconstitution and preparation of admixtures, push in injections and intravenous infusions).
Lecturers
Lailaa Cajee graduated from Wits in 2009 with a B. Pharm degree and in 2016/2017 attended the ESOP Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Masterclasses in Oncology. Her experience in oncology spans over 9 years and includes work on clinical trials, risk management programs, disease management programs, feasibility studies, training and education. She is a member of the ESOP and ISOPP. She is the founding director at Specialised Oncology Solutions, which serves as a source of expert information for doctors, pharmacists and companies in the Oncology field. Razeeya Khan graduated from Wits with a B. Pharm degree and from Rhodes University with an MSc in Pharmacology. She has experience in various fields of pharmacy, advanced health management and public health, and was instrumental in the setting up and management of tertiary public sector oncology pharmacy services. She manages the undergraduate pharmacotherapy oncology training at Wits University.Razeeya completed the ESOP Excellence Course in Oncology Pharmacy and is a member of SASOPh and ESOP.
